The British luxury sports car manufacturer, Aston Martin, has withdrawn their appeal against the disqualification of German Formula One driver, Sebastian Vettel.
The German’s car was found to have less than the mandatory one litre of fuel remaining for post-race testing, leading him to be thrown out of the results.
On Monday, they lost a bid to have the decision subjected to right of review.
The team submitted evidence to governing body the FIA showing that the lack of fuel was caused by a fuel-system failure.
This led to a leak, which they were unaware of after their race on 1st August; however, stewards ruled this mitigating circumstance “not relevant” and instead upheld their disqualification.
In a tweet on Thursday, Aston Martin said “Having considered our position and having noted the FIA stewards’ verdict that there was clear new evidence of a fuel system failure, we have nonetheless withdrawn our appeal on the basis that we believe doing so outweighs the benefits of it being heard”.
Vettel’s second place would have been the team’s best result of the season.
The decision means Vettel’s disqualification stands, as does the promotion by one position of all the drivers who finished behind him. This includes Hamilton and Carlos Sainz, who inherit second place and third respectively.
Vettel himself stays in 12th place on 30 points in the drivers’ standings, while Aston Martin are seventh on 48 points in the constructors’ championship.
